The Worst Class in the World

Class 4B stands condemned by headteacher Mrs Bottomley-Blunt as the worst in the entire school, a designation that comes with stern pronouncements about discipline and serious learning. Yet stepping through the classroom door reveals a reality far messier and infinitely more entertaining than any official assessment could capture. The children of 4B manage to transform the most ordinary school day into something wonderfully, reliably chaotic—though rarely in ways anyone might predict or intend.

The trouble begins innocuously enough. A batch of homemade biscuits, well-meaning though they may be, spirals into complete bedlam. Killer the dog, a creature whose presence in the classroom should perhaps have been questioned from the outset, proves his name is something of a misnomer when it comes to restraint and obedience, with the teacher's shoes becoming an early casualty of his appetite. An escaped rat tears through the orderly structures that adults have attempted to impose, creating fresh pandemonium at every turn. The cumulative effect of these incidents—and countless others—paints a portrait of a class that seems almost genetically incapable of executing any plan exactly as conceived.

What emerges across these pages is something more genuinely funny than any number of carefully engineered gags could achieve. There is humour in the gap between expectation and reality, in the way children's logic operates according to its own peculiar rules, and in the fundamental unpredictability of bringing together dozens of young people with limited impulse control and a genuine desire to cause trouble—however accidentally. The children of 4B are not malicious; they are simply operating in a world where consequences seem somehow negotiable and where a simple request to tidy up somehow always results in something more closely resembling a tornado aftermath.

Joanna Nadin, whose previous successes have demonstrated a sharp ear for the absurdities of childhood, brings her considerable talents to this debut work, finding comedy in the earnest failures of Class 4B to behave themselves, regardless of how much they—or their increasingly exasperated teacher—might wish otherwise. For anyone who has spent time in a classroom, either as child or adult, the familiar patterns will ring entirely true.
