D-Day Dog

Jack loves learning about war heroes. To him, soldiers represent bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice – just like his own dad, who serves as a reservist. So when Jack’s class heads off on a school trip to the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, he is thrilled. This is his chance to walk the ground where history was made, to imagine the courage of those who risked everything on 6 June 1944, and to pay respect to the men and women he has always admired.

But just as the trip begins, Jack’s world is shaken. His dad receives sudden orders to go on active duty, and the reality of modern warfare crashes into Jack’s life. What once seemed clear-cut – the glory and honour of serving one’s country – suddenly feels uncertain and frightening. Struggling with fear and anger, Jack turns to the one companion he can always count on: his loyal dog, Finn.

As the class visits memorials and battle sites, Jack becomes captivated by the story of Emile Corteil, a young British paratrooper who leapt into occupied France on D-Day with his dog, Glen, strapped to his chest. Through Emile’s sacrifice and the deep bond between soldier and dog, Jack begins to see the human cost of war in a new light. He realises that behind every medal and monument lies not just courage, but loss, pain, and impossible choices.

Weaving together past and present, Tom Palmer delivers a moving tale about friendship, loyalty, and what it truly means to be brave. With sensitivity and insight, D-Day Dog brings to life both the extraordinary history of the Normandy landings and one boy’s personal journey to understanding.
