Hans Christian Andersen

Born in Denmark in 1805, Hans Christian Andersen was an author of plays, novels and poems, but best known as the author of famous fairy tales.Andersen attended a local school for poor children, where he received only a basic education. He later worked as an apprentice weaver and tailor. He initially attempted to launch a career as an actor, but when this failed, he turned to poetry.His first collection of fairy tales were published in three instalments between 1835 and 1837. The Little Mermaid, included in the final instalment, cemented Andersen’s reputation. He continued to write fairy tales, and travelogues chronicling his travels through Europe.He died in 1872 at the age of 67, leaving behind an enormous cultural legacy.
